Keep Calm and Panic Later: Leadership Lessons from a Venomous Visitor
There are moments in life that show up uninvited and demand a response before you’ve even had a chance to gather your thoughts. For me, that moment happened one quiet afternoon when I looked outside and saw something gliding across our swimming pool.
Not a leaf.
Not a frog.
A venomous snake.
Just imagine it: a snake skimming the surface of the water like it was out for a casual afternoon swim. My stomach tightened. My heart raced. And for one very real second, the only thing in my head was, “Oh no. No, no, no.”
But leadership—real leadership—doesn’t live in that first reaction.
That’s instinct.
That’s fear.
That’s human.
The real power comes in what you choose next.
And right there in that moment, “keep calm and panic later” became more than a cute phrase. It became a survival strategy.
Panic wasn’t going to get the snake out of the pool.
Panic wasn’t going to keep us safe either.
So we did what leaders are called to do:
We paused.
We breathed.
We got intentional.
With a long pole and a skimmer net—plus a healthy dose of caution and prayer—we slowly maneuvered the snake into the net. It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t pretty. And it definitely wasn’t peaceful. But with steady hands and careful movement, we contained the situation and made sure the danger was removed from the pool area so no one would be harmed.
Once it was handled, the adrenaline dropped, the pool stilled, and life returned to normal.
Except… I wasn’t the same.
Because that moment taught me something important about leadership, clarity, and faith.
Where Faith Fits In
When fear shows up fast, faith has to show up faster.
There is nothing like a venomous snake to remind you how quickly your mind can spin stories, escalate danger, and leap straight into worst-case scenarios. But here’s what I know:
Faith doesn’t always remove the danger.
But it does remove the panic.
It grounds you.
It centers you.
It quiets the noise long enough for you to think clearly.
Faith whispers:
“Breathe. I am here. You are not alone.”
And that whisper becomes the difference between reacting in fear and responding with wisdom.
In that moment by the pool, faith didn’t magically lift the snake out of the water. But it did steady my hands and quiet my thoughts long enough to make a sane decision instead of a frantic one.
Leadership Through the Lens of Faith
Leadership is rarely about eliminating every threat.
It’s about staying present and discerning the next right step—even when the situation is uncomfortable, unexpected, or dangerous.
Faith strengthens leadership in three powerful ways:
1. Faith Helps You Respond Instead of React
That sacred pause—the breath between fear and clarity—is where your best decisions live.
Faith creates that pause.
It gives you a moment to ask,
“Lord, what do You want me to see? How should I move?”
2. Faith Helps You See Beyond the Moment
Obstacles aren’t punishments.
Challenges aren’t signs you’re failing.
Many times, they’re invitations:
to trust deeper,
to lead with more intention,
to grow in courage and conviction.
The snake wasn’t just a hazard…
it was a reminder that clarity appears when fear quiets down.
3. Faith Keeps Your Leadership Steady
People follow your presence before they follow your plan.
If your nerves tremble, their confidence does too.
But if you stay grounded, they find stability through you.
Faith creates that inner steadiness—
the kind that doesn’t rattle under pressure.
A Final Word
Life—and leadership—will always deliver unexpected “snakes in the pool.” Moments that feel urgent, dangerous, or overwhelming. Moments that test your composure and challenge your clarity.
You can’t stop those moments from happening.
But you can choose how you show up.
With faith as your anchor, calm becomes possible.
Clarity becomes accessible.
Wisdom becomes louder than fear.
So the next time life drops a venomous surprise into your peaceful day, remember:
Keep calm. Panic later.
Pause. Pray. Proceed.
Because clear thinking—and steadfast faith—will always carry you safely through.
