Life changing moments happen rarely, but when they do we hold onto them. I had one of those this morning.
Have you ever been driving down the road and heard a song for the very first time and all the sudden found yourself singing along at the top of your lungs with tears streaming down your face? That was me this morning.
This song had such a tremendous impact on me emotionally. It’s my song, it’s the song that I will remember as the song that forever changed my life and I will forever remember where I was the first time I heard it.
I truly believe the people I spent the weekend with prepared me for this impactful moment. You see, this weekend I spent time with Jen Sincero, Lisa Nichols, Lewis Howe, Tony Robbins, Mel Robbins, and God (not necessarily in that order.)
I finished Jen’s and started Mel’s books, I watched Lisa on YouTube, I listened to Lewis interview Tony, I watched one of Tony’s TED talks, and I spent time talking with God.
Just a little time each morning led me to a new moment, to a new message, to being open to what’s next, to saying “yes, with joy rather than complaint” the very moment my son called and asked me to bring keys to his work.
You see, it’s all timing. My son called. I said, “yes” without hesitation. I took my truck which I haven’t driven in two weeks since hurting my knee. I always have my radio on K-Love. This brand-new song with a real catch tune came on. I listened intently and what happened next was liberating.
I found myself singing words I had only just heard moments ago as I was banging out the beat on my steering wheel, with tears streaming down my face. The song… “The Break Up Song” my Francesa Battistelli
This song is about breaking up with fear! The lyrics are simple and profound. She even invites you to sing along if you feel the same as she does, “sick and tired of being sick and tired.”
The Breakup Song, Francesca Battistelli
Sick and tired of being sick and tired
Had as much of you as I can take
I’m so done, so over being afraid
I’ve gone through the motions
I’ve been back and forth
I know that you’re thinking you’ve heard this before
I don’t know how to say it
So I’m just gonna say it, yeah
Fear, you don’t own me
There ain’t no room in this story
And I ain’t got time for you
Telling me what I’m not
Like you know me well guess what?
I know who I am
I know I’m strong
And I am free
Got my own identity
So fear, you will never be welcome here
Take a minute, let it settle in
You probably never saw it coming
Something’s gotta give so I give up you, oh
There’s no room for you here
Yeah, I’ve had enough
The “No Vacancy” sign on my heart is lit up
In case you didn’t hear it
Here it is again,
Oh, fear, you don’t own me
There ain’t no room in this story
And I ain’t got time for you
Telling me what I’m not
Like you know me well guess what?
I know who I am
I know I’m strong
And I am free
Got my own identity
So fear, you will never be welcome here
Is there anybody out there just like me?
Anybody needing fear to leave?
If you don’t know how to say it
Sing along with me
Sing fear, you don’t own me
There ain’t no room in this story
And I ain’t got time for you
Telling me what I’m not
Like you know me well guess what?
I know who I am
I know I’m strong, brave
And I am free
Got my own identity
So fear, you will never be welcome here
Whoa, goodbye, goodbye fear
Whoa, you will never be welcome here
If you’re ready to break up with fear, claim this song. Make it you anthem. Do what you need to do to own your power. Thank fear for protecting you from hurt and pain, but it’s time to push beyond your boundaries and start playing a bigger game than fear is willing to play.
Surround yourself with positive encouraging people who have your back and will pick you up, dust you off, and tell you it’s okay to fail. Failure is where we learn just how strong we are and find the courage to keep moving toward our dreams.
