Get the “Boom!” You know you’ve nailed your message when your friend says…”Boom!” Over the past few weeks I’ve been working on recording some videos with my dear friend Kathy Marcino of KMM DISC Consulting. We have spent time laughing together at the bloopers and celebrated the moments when we’ve nailed it. We’ve also learned a few things along the way.
We’ve learned that it doesn’t have to be perfect. Good is GOOD! Get it done and get it out there. If it weren’t for Kathy, I’d still be working on perfecting my scripts.
Speaking of scripts, I’ve learned they don’t work for me. Give me an outline and let me speak from my heart. Kathy on the other hand is a pro. She loves to work from a script, memorize her key points and deliver an amazing message with confidence.
We’ve also learned that finding the best light is a challenge that can be overcome. Be aware of your background and your lighting once your camera is turned on. Move around until you find a good spot that works.
Last night I realized that I have a picture of my favorite TEDx speaker over my left shoulder in my new videos. How fun, but not intentional. I am certainly going with it though! I’m sure she will love when I point it out or put out a challenge for people to find Kristin, kind of like “Where’s Waldo?”
We also learned that in order to be comfortable on camera, you need to be comfortable. I am a very expressive person, so for me sitting down just doesn’t work unless I am intentional about drawing my audience into a personal message I want to share.
Standing and using my hands works so much better for me. Find what works for you. Be comfortable, it’s the best way for your expressive self to shine through.
Recap of what we learned:
- Good is Good!
- Script or outline, fond what works for you.
- Move around to find the right lighting.
- Be aware of your background.
- Go with it when the unexpected happens.
- Be comfortable, find a posture that works for you.
- Be your expressive self and shine.
My point in sharing all of this is to help you understand that experimenting with video for your brand marketing can be fun and enlightening. You don’t have to go it alone and you certainly don’t need to memorize a script to create a great commercial unless you want to.
When I work with clients on their brand message for networking, there is simplicity in the delivery once you understand the formula. The same formula can be applied to video with one or two slight modifications, namely your greeting at the beginning and adding your website or contact info.
Video marketing isn’t scary, you just haven’t tried it yet. Most people shy away from it because they don’t know what to say. That’s what we are here for. At 30 Second Success we help you craft your message for networking and for video that truly connects with your audience and drives more business to your door. Schedule a call today and get the “Boom!” you deserve.
